Ritter Sport: El Cacao is setting new standards in cocoa cultivation.

Ritter Sport grows its own cocoa at the El Cacao farm in eastern Nicaragua. By combining traditional methods of cocoa cultivation with modern expertise, the company is setting new social and ecological standards.

A farm that sets an example for people and nature:

Since Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG acquired the formerly unused pastureland in 2012, a lot has happened: A pioneering farm has been developed on the 2,500-hectare site, creating jobs in the surrounding area and on the plantation. Ritter uses an agroforestry system, combining cocoa cultivation with other crops, to manage the agricultural land. The result is a sustainable and resilient cultivation system that benefits the soil and the animals that inhabit it.

‘Wild’ nature also flourishes on El Cacao: only half of the total area is used for growing cocoa, while the other half is protected as rainforest, wetlands and river basins in their natural state.

This exciting holistic project is one that we regularly report on in the chocolate manufacturer’s sustainability publications.
