Organic dairy farmers are becoming 'climate farmers'
How can dairy farms reduce and capture CO₂ emissions? To answer these questions and contribute to regional climate protection, the Andechs organic dairy Scheitz launched the ‘KlimaBauer’ pilot project in 2021.
The Andechs Climate Agreement
The project’s aim is to offset CO2 emissions at a regional level. The participating organic farmers from the Upper Bavarian region become ‘Climate Farmers’ and partners of the initiative for this purpose. With scientific support, they develop and test strategies and measures to avoid and bind CO2. These range from building up humus in the fields to improving barn management. The Andechser Molkerei pays ten euros per year for every tonne of CO2 equivalent avoided or bound by the ‘Climate Farmers’. The measures implemented will be reviewed internally after two years and externally after five years.
The savings achieved are reflected in the updated carbon footprint. This enables climate-friendly agriculture to continue developing and secures productive soils for future generations.
Engel & Zimmermann co-initiated the idea and has supported Andechser Molkerei in communicating the project from the outset. These extensive communication measures include press events on organic farms, as well as various other initiatives that highlight the dairy’s and the ‘Climate Farmers’ contribution to climate protection.
